Stunning 14-Metre Insulated Glass Extension to Open-Plan Living Area

CASE STUDY

A Solarlux Akzent Plus insulated glass extension to this beautifully renovated Victorian country house in Shropshire.

Features full-length triple-glazed bifolding doors and a powered external canopy for shading.

Our client approached us with a clear ambition: to extend their open-plan kitchen, dining and living space in a way that felt light-filled, contemporary and closely connected to the outdoors. Rather than opting for a traditional brick-built extension, they chose a bespoke glass extension — sometimes referred to by the German name of 'wintergarden' — which is engineered to deliver year-round comfort alongside striking architectural impact. The result is a 14-metre-long glass extension that transforms how the family lives in their home.

The Brief

Bullet iconA seamless continuation of their open-plan kitchen, dining and living area
Bullet iconA space that could be used comfortably throughout the year
Bullet iconMaximum natural light
Bullet iconA stronger connection to the garden
Bullet iconA high-end, architecturally refined finish

A conventional brick extension would have added floor space, but it would not have delivered the same sense of openness or immersion in the landscape. The priority was to create a space that feels almost outdoors — without sacrificing thermal performance.

The Solution: A Bespoke German-Engineered Glass Extension

We supplied and installed a fully bespoke glass extension, precision-manufactured in Germany to an exceptional standard of engineering and design. We are one of the country's leading specialists in such extensions with many years experience.

The structure features:

Bullet iconHigh thermal insulation throughout
Bullet iconHigh-specification triple glazing
Bullet iconAdvanced framing systems designed for strength and longevity

Thanks to its cutting-edge thermal performance, the extension can be used just like a brick-built extension all year round. The triple glazing ensures excellent heat retention while maintaining large, uninterrupted glass panels for maximum visual impact.

Design & Layout

At 14 metres in length, the extension dramatically extends the footprint of the open-plan interior. It creates a continuous flow from kitchen to dining to living space, all visually connected to the garden beyond. A key design feature is the installation of three sets of bifolding doors, comprising 13 panels in total. These allow the entire façade to be opened during warmer months.

In summer, the effect is transformative: the doors fold away and the boundary between inside and outside almost disappears. Cooking, dining and relaxing feel as though they are happening outdoors, while still benefiting from the comfort and structure of a fully engineered extension.

Solar Shading
To enhance usability in hot weather, the clients also selected an optional power-operated external canopy. This provides effective solar shading when needed, helping regulate temperature while preserving views and natural light.

The Result

The finished wintergarden has completely transformed the home with the extension creating a light-filled architectural feature that enhances both everyday living and entertaining.

The clients are delighted with the outcome and describe the space as their favourite part of the house — a place where they can enjoy the changing seasons while remaining in complete comfort.

This project demonstrates how a high-performance glass extension can deliver the best of both worlds: the solidity, usability amd comfort of a traditional extension, combined with the openness, light and connection to nature that only glass can provide.
