Combining Cutting Edge Windows & Doors from Internorm & Solarlux with Traditional Materials in a Self-Build in Nottinghamshire
This striking self-build home in Nottinghamshire demonstrates how contemporary architectural glazing can be successfully combined with traditional design principles to meet the requirements of a conservation area. Replacing a collection of open barns, the new home was carefully designed to retain the original form and mimic the open front of the buildings while delivering the comfort, performance and natural light expected of a modern family home.
The clients wanted the warmth and character of timber internally while achieving outstanding thermal performance throughout the year. Internorm's timber-aluminium window systems provided the ideal solution, combining natural timber finishes on the inside with durable, low-maintenance aluminium externally. Georgian glazing bars were incorporated to complement the traditional appearance required for the conservation setting without compromising modern performance.
The courtyard elevations feature large expanses of glazing that maximise natural light and strengthen the connection between the interior and outdoor spaces. A combination of fixed glazing and sliding door systems creates uninterrupted views while solid oak columns echo the appearance of the original open barns, preserving the architectural character of the site.
Spectrum worked closely with the homeowners, architect and builders throughout the project to ensure every glazing element met both the design vision and technical requirements. The result is a home that successfully balances traditional architectural influences with contemporary glazing technology, creating comfortable, energy-efficient living spaces while respecting its historic surroundings.
