Just installed.... a Solarlux Acubis — an uninsulated structure we call a "glass house". Think of it as a glass covered patio. The front has frameless slide-and-turn glass panels to open it up in summer. It's only single glazed, so not for all year use but actually it can be lovely on a sunny winter's day. In warmer weather, it is a welcome sheltered spot when there's a breeze, and you don't need to move when that summer shower drifts in from nowhere! We've been busy in the Lake District installing this Solarlux glass extension. It's an unusually complex technical design, which is exactly why they came to us — we specialise in complex designs and have a track record of successfully achieving projects like this. The main reason for the complexity is that the design needed to wrap around the chimney breast and if you look carefully, you'll see it's asymmetrical with the left roof being shorter than the right, as well as the corner inset. Add to that, we incorporated a complex concealed guttering and drainage system, plus the structure is taller than it looks and the weight of the roof sections required a separate supporting beam linking the two sides of the roof, plus additional vertical support to a goalpost structure at the front.
Originally, there was an old lean-to here but our clients wanted something that they could use all year round, not just in summer. The Solarlux system is designed for year-round use with it's excellent insulation — plus with ventilation options and an electric external canopy for shading, it shouldn't overheat in hot weather either.
